You ask what man food is…psshhh, you clearly have no man in you…call me if you want one LMAO.

Here is the first man food…it is throwing spaghetti sauce, sausage link, salmon sizzled with soy sauce, and fried egg. You cook everything then mix it all together and warm it up…then you put it over spaghetti noodles…and there you go!! Man food (must be said in cave man voice or in a legit man voice).

This is called Stupid Big Protein Spaghetti!!

At 8:45 PM Howard Hall, the University of Portland’s Gym begins to become vacant and many users are finishing up their workout. 8:50 PM The gym has a couple people in the entire weight room. 9:00 PM on the dot and the gym is full of laughing Pacific Islanders, talking both in English and in Pigeon (Tagalog and English together to form one bilingual language). The few people who were in the gym prior to the armada of Hawaiians look in awe as the Hawaiian students slowly take over each machine and free weight bench. Soon chatting patrons surround the crucial space in front of the mirrors and weights are scattered throughout the area as part of a routine. What has just happened was the daily occurrence where a majority of the University of Portland’s Hawaiian students gathers at the gym to connect, talk, and workout.

The number of members of that community that who meet ranges from seven to eighteen individuals. The number of people varies, but the time of the meeting is always the same; 9:00 PM until they all leave about 10:30 PM. Senior Brian Walker says, “It is not a new or uncommon event for the gym to be empty at one point and full the next.” The group does not segregate between sexes but its ethnic makeup is strictly Pacific Islanders. The females were involved both in past and present relationships within the group as noted by Junior Dawa Bunao. Inside the group are smaller sub-groups of what seem to be the better friends, which work out together, starting at the bench press and ending up over by the mirror doing curls.

The time on the clock shows when all the chatter ends and the workout begins.

One of the ‘key’ members of the social group is Junior Randall Duldulao. He agreed to meet and discuss the group, laughing saying, “Yeah, we noticed we took over the gym.” After discussing the meeting, Duldulao said, “The gym is a place where new freshman could go and meet different members of the University of Portland Hawaiian community and develop social networks for entertainment and friends.” Duldulao then detailed a story about when he was a freshman and was invited to hangout with the other Hawaiians. He noted that they quickly became good friends based on their similarities and shared experiences on the Hawaiian Islands.

Different clients of the gym commented on the group’s attendance and the way they interacted with others in the gym. Senior John Endresen said, “The Hawaiians are an exclusive group that come in and seem to have a great time together. I personally know one of them so the rest of them are cool with me and let me work out in between their sets.” Another patron, Senior Sarah Wetter said, “Their exclusivity is not bad but it does not promote unity or diversity within the University of Portland. It is directly linked to their independence from the mainland since all of them live thousands of miles away.” She then smiled and said, “A social scientist would say that the sub-group atmosphere is amazingly dynamic and exclusive.” After her quirky grin and comment, she walked away and began talking to one of the individuals who came in the large Hawaiian group.

Isiah Thomas Illegal Gambling:

The story that we read was about the Isiah Thomas illegal gambling report that investigative reporter Vince Wade of WJBK-TV2 broke the story first.

The problem with reporting the story is that they were missing straight facts and had a lot of guess-work. Wade’s story beat The Detroit Free Press, which published a similar, follow-up story the next morning, June 16, based its report on “people familiar with the investigation.”

The lack of solid evidence was concluded bad investigating and Mr. Wade received much backlash from the story.

Reporters for The Detroit News were told by editors their piece could not be published until the information had been confirmed through documents or on-the-record interviews. Yet, the story ran in the paper.

“And then he said *&%*!!!”

Sexist and Vulgar Remarks:

Sheriff Forrest Sebring had made his comments during discussion of a plan to house female inmates for the first time in Monroe County’s history. It was dominated by the male officials’ view that women prisoners would likely pose numerous problems.

This is weird because he is a public official and supposed to be the moral compass of a community. He was describing sexual procedures and acts to the media!!

He stated that it was jail talk, but why would a rationale public official who is supposed to be professional discuss these topics with the media.

President Jared R. Stefani’s Obituary:

President Jared Raymond “Stefani” Stefani, died aged 100. The revered general and former President of the United States died of natural causes on the Friday before Easter. Born July 10, 1988, in Puyallup, WASH., he was predeceased by his father, Robert Stefani Jr.; his mother, Joan Stefani.

He showed his talent in the United States Army as an officer, making crucial contributions to the successful planning and executing of the War of Chinese Aggression (2021-2025). Stefani, as he liked to be called, served his country for nearly 32 years in the United States Army until he retired at the rank of General of the Army. His service to his nation did not end after his retirement. He returned to service in military engagements during the “Conflicting East and West” period.

On August 28, 2006, fresh from high school, Stefani walked into his first college class at the University of Portland. He stayed at Portland until he commissioned four years later with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in philosophy. He quickly rose past his peers through the ranks of the Army Corps of Engineers, upon completion of battalion command time; he attended War College and took command of the 3rd Infantry Division. After a few years of battle command, he joined the Joint Chiefs of Staff, alongside his college roommate General Brian Walker. After completing his service as a Chief of Staff, Stefani retired and became the Secretary of Defense for President Maria Bonpanto.

After an absence from public life for two years, Stefani re-entered the realm of politics with a strict reformist attitude incorporated his political philosophy and served as President Cornelius Porandi’s Secretary of State created the Treaty of Pacific Flow that ended the “Conflicting East West” period.

The national support for Stefani was so strong that his bid for the Presidency became a landslide victory, uniting both parties dominating the political scene at the time. He was admired for his rational thinking and common sense approach to political questions. His love of dogs was demonstrated by his adoption of 18 rescued dogs at the White House.

In an interview, Stefani was asked if he missed the military, to which he responded “I am still in battle; I have put down the sword and picked up the pen.” His love for his fellow man was one thing, but the love he had for his wife and family cannot be detailed in words.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Stefani; his sons, Maximus (Carolyn) Stefani of Seattle, WASH.; James (Fiona) of Los Angeles, CALIF.; Roman Stefani (Brianna) of Bellevue, WASH.; and his daughter, Jennifer (Kevin) Bradock of Portland, OREG.; grandchildren, Brian, Nic, John, Jerome, Joe, Eric, Julie, Jill, and Melissa, as well as numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2088, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. with Father Franzer officiating. The burial will be at the Arlington National Cemetery. Anyone individuals that would like to pay their respects are invited to attend the funeral and wake. The family of President Stefani would like the funeral to be considered a celebration of a great life, led with intelligence, dignity, and a childlike reverence for humor and fun.

1440 Class:

Cornelius from New Jersey-known for his belt buckles.

Works for and sounds like he owns the Sentinel.

Was looked at by the Neeman Journalism lab.

Quote-”transparent democracy needs investigative reporting.”

Gave an analogy of the police to reporters. A patrol officer is like a reporter (an outside man) and a detective is an investigative reporter.

He studied at NYU under George Stoney.

Activist Journalism = participate + observe; but there is a fine line to walk.

Quote- “question your own assumptions.”

He described the importance of being a credible reporter.

Overall he was entertaining to watch, even though he would look at his phone which seemed to suggest he did not care that much, but in actuality he was looking over talking points. He seems to be like an underground reporter for the St. John area and acts like he enjoys his job and journalism.

She discussed a story about the open-pit mine and now it is a toxic lake close to her Mother’s home.

Kept discussing about how she was a Catholic.

Quote-”Societies need people to see.”

Planned on being a petroleum engineer but was in a horrible accident and her mother saw her journal and said she should be a writer, so she answered an ad after she recovered from accident and graduated. Moved to Alaska, where Sarah Palin was a beauty queen.

Quote- “Journalism is a life of Kings.”

Always take for the people in the front row of meetings when reporting on meetings, have the most to offer.

Ask-”Who has a stake in it; who would know.”

Reasons people hate the press is either ‘people’s stories are not treated respectfully.’

She was an entertaining reporter and gave lots of insight into how she conducts her research.

The two obituaries that were written detailed the person’s life and the positive that they did to the world. They show that both were successful at their profession, be it a Psychiatrist or an expert tracker. Both show the individual’s pursuit for becoming more educated, be it from different fields of psychiatry or wilderness survival.

Ari Kiev, a Psychiatrist, Dies at 75: Explains the life and significant areas of study that Ari Kiev (Keeve) did in his life. His love and pursuit of knowledge. His pursuit landed him many jobs to help athletes and investment bankers.

Donald Gomez “Don”: Explains the life and love that Don had for tracking and helping people. Some say he was the best tracker in the state. He had a short-coming of being used by needy people especially woman with children. He just could not say “No.”

Osredkar12.wordpress.com (Priscilla’s Blog): The story is interesting because you never think about the inner workings of everyone that puts on the game. The athletes are not the only ones that work hard before, during, and after the games. It is also interested that each game has about 92 employees to facilitate the game. That is an enormous amount of people who put on the game. Your pictures are at the very beginning, you might want to put them in the story or after. You should have a picture of Wally the Pilot, but that is just a suggestion.

somegirlfrompdx.wordpress.com (Lillian Ongelungel’s Blog): Well written and fun to read. There is a reason you are the teachers favorite. Your reporting is interesting and since I know you from personal experience I see parts that stick out to be Ongelungel’s way of explaining and reporting. Keep up the good work and thanks for all of your hard work reporting.

chelseam614.wordpress.com (Chelsea’s Blog): The story is interesting because it tells about the activities the university puts on to incorporate their teaching, faith, and leadership mission. I did see a few grammer corrections but it is small and not important to me. A lot of good quotes but no pictures on the site.

A Check a Day Keeps the Stress Away
The University of Portland’s emphasis on grades does not correlate on student’s access to knowing the grades. By Jared Stefani (www.stefanij.wordpress.com)

It is half way through the semester: the stress of midterms is over, the classes seem to be moving along and coeds are unanimously at the point of roughing through to the home stretch of winter break. Students feel confident about their standings in classes because they have turned in all their major assignments and attending almost all of the classes. When the final for the class comes, students take it and wait until they find their grade. When they get their grade back it is a lot lower than they expected. They wonder how this could have happened and why the professor did not let the students know their standings in the class. This long anecdote is not fiction; it is a reoccurring part of the academic cycle at the University of Portland. The University of Portland pays a large amount of money for professors to report class assignments and grades, but most professors do not use the “Pilots Portal.”

“Pilots Portal” is a network that uses an open-source program called Moodle to help all members of the University’s community stay connected with important notes, updates, documents, and other necessary resources. The official Moodle website describes the program as “a Course Management System.” It is a web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites.” The University of Portland uses this application for all of its faculty and students and calls it PilotsUP. The University’s website states that, “PilotsUP improves the way the University community interacts online.” There are different facets of PilotsUP: Web Mail, My Announcements, Learning@UP, Campus Events, and Self-Serve. Each separate program offers the user control their university life. However, a majority of UP professors do not use the Learning@UP function of PilotsUP to the fullest capability in order to help their students. The university’s website states Learning@UP is an “online learning management system that helps you prepare for and follow-up on your classroom experiences online. The University offers students and university faculty an online environment where they can share assignments, communicate, discuss, and enhance the learning experience.” Yet many students at the University find that their professors fail to post important pieces of information to the Portal, thereby failing to use a universal tool for education that would help students anywhere, as long as they have Internet access. This tends to be a large problem when students face unexpected circumstances, such as traveling across the nation for a family emergency.

The school incorporates this into their online program, but most professor, do not use the “Grades” application of the program to tell students their current status. When asking student Gabriel Vaught about the uses of PilotsUP: Learning@UP he said, “The University has a program which they pay for but do not use. It seems to be a waste of money.” The school does pay for the program, but University of Portland Provost, Brother Stabrowski said, “I don’t know how much they pay for it but they do pay for it.” It seems that the University of Portland pays for the program but the Provost does not even know the price. The program does get used a lot through the School of Nursing. Senior nursing student John Endresen said the School of Nursing uses the program to tell the student’s grades directly after we take a test.” John then went onto his PilotsUP: Learning@UP and showed all of his classes and the corresponding grades that he had earned, noting at the bottom of the page his overall grade. “It helps keep track of my status so I do not have to be in wonder and worry about it,” laughingly said John.

Interviewing University of Portland Provost, Br. Stabrowski, helped explain the reason for having the program but not having a policy enforcing professors to return grade reports any time prior to completion of the course. Br. Stabrowski said, “The school does not have any sort of policy about reporting grades to students, it is based on the professors discretion.” The Provost was asking why there was no policy to return grades to students and said, “Teaching is an art, some people do it differently.” After discusses about the art of teaching, the Provost described why he could not enforce a rule about returning grades prior to completion of the course by laughingly saying, “Leading professors is like herding goats, all of them are intelligent successful people, and just because I say something does not mean they have to follow it.” The Provost did say there was a new policy, trying to be incorporated into the academic plan, in which “all 100 and 200 classes have to report midterm grades to help freshman get acquainted to College. We test early and give feedback early.”
If professors will not use the PilotsUP: Learning@UP grade return then a student will just have to go to the office hours and have professor calculate the grades, if the professor will do that. It seems the students at the University of Portland will just continue striving for their best but not having status reports of their grades.
