Seniors Joe Price and Jereme Kemp find successful ways to live independently in the University Village.

Teaching More Than Academics
Students across the nation seek different types of education rather than the traditional academically education.  By Jared Stefani

The quest for the right college remains a critical milestone for high school graduates around the world.  Finding a comfortable academic niche in life is further stressed by the parents’ desire to find a university of the highest caliber, or potentially based on a student’s ambition to become successful, or maybe graduates just attend college because it’s an expected step to take before becoming a member of the “real world.”
The University of Portland takes a different approach to universal education, seeking new and innovative ways to help students become productive adults while still fostering a climate for its Catholic teachings.
Colleges aim to cultivate young adults into independent and capable individuals.  University of Portland Provost, Br. Donald Stabrowski said, “No one will take care of you after you leave here.”  But if no one takes care of you after you graduate, what does the University do to prepare students for the seemingly harsh real world?  After speaking with multiple students, many of them feel that the University puts too many restrictions on the activities students can and cannot do.  Each understands the school has an obligation to provide safety to its students, especially those so keen on suing.  The battle ensues between what is seen as coddling and what is perceived as structured growth.
Different students at all grade levels had their own interpretation of the schools endeavors to take a high school kid and create him into a successful member of society.  Most students said the University’s attempt to do this act is in accordance with the University’s three central tenets of Teaching, Faith, and Service.  “The University pushes its three central tenets onto students,” said Senior Jereme Kemp.  Stated clearly on the University’s Website are the central tenets, Teaching, Faith, Service that the University is committed to.  Each is important in its own right. “You can’t isolate the most important aspect,” said Br. Donald.
Br. Donald said, “Immature students seem to have the most student conduct related issues. People that aren’t ready for college are the ones most likely to get into trouble.  People aren’t ready for school but they come anyways.  They need psychological readiness.”

5K

Incorporating UP's tenet (service) of service students planned a 5K run for charity benefits in October

So what does all of this mean?  Does this mean that the University coddles students or gives them a unique opportunity to learn from mistakes and grow as an adult?  It is up to your own interpretation of what the rules mean to you.  Senior Sarah Wetter said, “[I] think that as none of us yet behave like adults entirely, that the school feels the need to take responsibility for us by providing structures, safety requirements, or rules intended to teach us the proper behavior for ‘life’.”
The different aspects of learning that different Universities offer are important to the growth of the young student.  The University of Portland explicitly states its mission and tenets taught to students and students still enroll in classes and attend.  Students may not agree with the certain practices the University employees when developing students, but the student agreed to follow the rules and structure of the University by paying to attend and signing ResLife contracts their freshman year.  The Coordinator for Student Conduct, Natalie Shank, was asked for an interview but declined to conduct it.

Nut graf:  After nearly a year spent considering the matter, a task force dominated by government and traditional media representatives has come up with a policy that could make it difficult, though not impossible, for new, independent bloggers to gain access.

I like how in the story it stated that Bloggers are not journalist.  It is about time someone told the truth about blogs…they are individuals with public diaries.
